Forrest Frank Portland Concert reviews
Alice in Chain rocked the casino
The first time I saw Forrest Frank, I was a bit apprehensive about how they would sound with a different singer. If there were any doubts about William DuVall's ability to fill Staley's shoes, they were quickly dispelled as he belted out those high wails on the hit MAN IN THE BOX. I could have sworn Layne Staley was still alive as the band rocked out to ROOSTER, THEM BONES, and HEAVEN BESIDE YOU, along with all the other Alice in Chains songs that dominated alternative radio during the days of Pearl Jam, Soundgarden, and Nirvana. While William DuVall held the microphone, lead guitarist and co-founder Jerry Cantrell stole the spotlight. Mr. Cantrell, known as one of the guitar legends of 90's alternative/grunge/metal rock, was the main voice on stage and even brought his father Jerry Sr. out for a surprise appearance. By the end of the performance, Cantrell and his band had played nearly every song from my Alice in Chains Greatest Hits CD, plus a few extras for the die-hard fans. Jerry even teased the crowd with the opening riff of Kansas's CARRY ON WAYWARD SON before stopping, joking, "I can't play a Kansas song in Oklahoma." No one seemed to mind, especially since the audience was mostly from Texas. "Until next summer," Jerry bid farewell as the show came to a close. Despite not being the biggest Alice in Chains fan and having a terrible seat at WinStar, I have to admit that the Alice In Chains experience is truly worth it (even with a lousy seat).
